Have you been recommended to try microneedling by your dermatologist or esthetician? Or perhaps you are simply curious about microneedling seeing it on social media?

As with all anti aging skin treatments, you should have a basic understanding of this wonderful tool for increasing collagen production in the skin.

As with an aesthetic treatment, you’ll want to know details about the procedure, downtime, and when you can expect to see results.

Microneedling can address concerns around skin texture, tone, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, and skin laxity.

Therefore, microneedling has incredibly diverse applications that can suit the needs of many clients and address multiple skin concerns within one treatment.

Best of all, nearly everyone is a candidate for microneedling with a few exceptions that will be discussed below.

This minimally invasive skin treatment can become a routine part of your anti-aging plan to maintain your youthful glow.

Key Takeaways

  • Microneedling is a safe treatment when done by a professional who uses the body’s healing mechanisms to revitalize skin.
  • A variety of skin conditions can be effectively treated with microneedling.
  • Minimal downtime is needed for this procedure with only minor adjustments to your routine post-treatment.
  • Full results can be seen 4-6 weeks after your treatment.

So, What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is called collagen induction therapy. In other words, microneedling increases collagen in the skin.

Collagen is a strong protein in the skin that maintains the firmness and elasticity of the skin.

As we age, collagen production in the body naturally declines. Collagen can also be damaged from trauma to the skin, which often creates scars.

Microneedling uses a pen with a dermaroller at the end. The dermaroller is made of rows of very thin and sterile needles.

When the microneedling pen is turned on, the needles move up and down rapidly.

Before you start worrying, rest assured these needles are only a few millimeters long!

These needles create tiny punctures in the skin. The magic of microneedling happens when the body sends collagen to the area to heal the small holes.

More collagens laid down in the skin means more elasticity, fullness, and lift to the skin!

What Can I Expect During And After Microneedling?

You may be wondering if microneedling is a painful skin treatment.

Your dermatologist or esthetician will first apply a numbing cream to the area to create a perfectly comfortable experience.

Depending on the cream used, it can take 20-40 minutes for the cream to take effect. Some clients like to bring a book or earphones to pass the time.

The treatment time itself depends on what areas you are having treated, however, the average time of a microneedling session on the face is about 30 minutes.

Yale Medicine Plastic Surgeon Dr. Vasquez says: “Microneedling is an exciting treatment that has very little downtime but visible results,”.

What downtime should be expected after microneedling?

Redness and inflammation of the skin will be at it’s peak 2-3 days after your session. The redness appears to many similar to a sunburn.

Receiving a microneedling session will mean making some minor adjustments to your routine afterward to help you healing process.

This includes avoiding makeup for 2-3 days. It’s beneficial to avoid heavy exercise or sweating.

Ensuring daily sunscreen protection is important because the skin is more sensitive after microneedling. However, the first SPF application shouldn’t be until 24 hours after your microneedling session.

According to most dermatologists, prolonged and direct sun exposure should be avoided for 1 week after treatment.

It is important to discuss with your aesthetic provider which skin products you use or any upcoming anti aging skin treatments you may have planned.

The reason why your aesthetic provider will ask what upcoming treatments you have planned is that healing properly from microneedling may require holding off on some treatments for a bit, such as a chemical peel.

Your aesthetic provider will also want to know your full skin care regimen to give you appropriate post-treatment instructions.

Your microneedling experience may require waiting a bit before using certain skin products, such as retinols.

Who Can Benefit From Microneedling?

Now that we understand the logistics of microneedling, let’s discuss skin conditions that can benefit from this treatment.

  • Scarring, including stretch marks
  • Skin hyperpigmentation AKA dark spots.
  • Hair loss when microneedling is applied to the scalp
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Lax or thin skin

According to a 2020 study from Pubmed of 120 individuals with scarring, 2.5 treatments with microneedling improved the appearance of all scars by at least 50%.

Even better, 65% of patients in this study experienced over 75% improvement in the appearance of their scarring.

Microneedling uses the body’s healing system to rejuvenate skin.

Additionally, the small channels in the skin that microneedling creates help deliver serums and active ingredients into the deep layers of the skin that cannot normally be reached if simply applied topically.

Who Might Want to Reconsider Microneedling?

Who may want to reconsider microneedling?

As amazing as this therapy is, there are some individuals who are better off seeking other aesthetic treatments. These include:

FAQ

Question 1: Is it okay to pull peeling skin after microneedling?

Answer: Please avoid touching peeling skin and allow it to naturally flake off. Moisturizing your skin can help with the appearance of flakes.

Question 2: Can microneedling skin treatments be done at home?

Answer: Microneedling is a medical procedure that creates small wounds in the skin and is best done by a professional. Microneedling done at home can be risky.

According to dermatologist Melissa Levin, MD, “The at-home microneedling devices are difficult to clean, and they dull quickly”. Professionals ensure their tools are sterile and high quality.

Question 3: How soon will I notice the results of microneedling?

Answer: On average, your peak results will be noticeable 4-6 weeks after treatment.
